A habitat aquarium from Lake Tanganyika with Vallisneria and Tanganyika cichlids. Lake Tanganyika is situated along the western frontier of Tanzania with Congo to the west and Zambia to the south - and like Lake Malawi it is a known habitat within aquaristic. For many years, the aquascaper Jan Hjort Ebdrup has taken an interest in cichlids, both African and South American. The species are: Eretmodus Cyanostictus (mpimbwe), Neolamprologus Multifasciatus, Neolamprologus Leleupi, Neolamprologus Brichardi, Paracyprichromis Nigripinnis, and the sheatfish Synodontis Petricola. In this layout, Jan cheats a little, as he has used the Asian Vallisneria Spiralis 'Tiger' and planted a group of Cryptocoryne x Willisii. None of the plants are native plants of Lake Tanganyika, but in fact the list of native species is long and holds among others Potamogeton, Ottelia and Utricularia species besides Vallisneria, which is the most used genus in Tanganyika biotope aquariums.

Tip! Shells and small conches are excellent hiding places for the cichlids, who also use them for fry.
